About the meditation classes

Updated

Meditation is a journey of self-discovery. By making the mind calm and quiet, we can go deep within and discover who we really are. Each moment can be experienced with an awakened heart, and give life a dimension of real joy and satisfaction. Our unlimited capacities as human beings can be manifested, and we learn how to effectively solve life’s problems and challenges.

There are many different kinds of meditation. Which one do you teach?
We call it “heart centre” meditation. We do not use a particular word or mantra. We try to gradually quiet the mind and enter into the spiritual heart. In the beginning we use various visualizations to help us in this process.

Who is Sri Chinmoy?
Sri Chinmoy is our meditation teacher. You can find more information about his life and philosophy on www.srichinmoy.org

Is this a religion?
Not at all. Meditation is simply a technique commonly used to look within. It is something every human being can learn to do, regardless of their faith. What we find once we look within differs according to the nature of each individual seeker.

Why is it free?
Peace and happiness is inner wealth – it cannot be bought and sold! But to gain this wealth requires sincerity and consistent effort on our part. That is the only fee. Sri Chinmoy’s students offer meditation classes as a public service. Once upon a time the class givers were also beginners; now they regard it as a privilege to be able to share with others the fruits they have discovered along this path of meditation. Meditation is something everyone can benefit from, and everybody should have the opportunity to try it out!

Do I need to bring anything?
If you can take a shower and put on clean, loose-fitting clothes, that is ideal. But if this is not possible for some reason, then it  is also fine. The most important thing is your sincere aspiration to learn something new about yourself.

What is the Sri Chinmoy Centre?
The Sri Chinmoy Centre is a group of individuals from different faiths and different walks of life who follow the path of meditation taught by Sri Chinmoy. By meditating together twice a week, and through various other activities in the realms of sports, music, humanitarian effort and peace activities, we strive to cultivate inner growth and to offer  harmony and positive energy to the world at large, which is a cornerstone in Sri Chinmoy’s philosophy.

Are there continuing meditation classes?
Our goal in offering meditation classes is to help you establish your own daily meditation practice. If you feel that our style of meditation is good for you and you would like to sincerely follow a path of meditation, then we offer continuing classes where we teach more about Sri Chinmoy’s path. “When we meditate, what we actually do is enter into the deeper part of our being. At that time we are able to bring to the fore the wealth that we have deep within us. Meditation shows us how we can aspire for something and then achieve it. If we practice meditation daily, then we can rest assured that the problems of our life, inner and outer, are solved.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         -Sri Chinmoy
